Jazz-Swing-Be-Bop
Eric Koppa's homage to McCoy Tyner, "Angel Song," is a dynamic journey pulsating with fervent passion. Commencing with a free-spirited interplay among piano, bass, and drums, the alto saxophone enriches the tapestry, building to the exuberant main theme. Solo sections unravel the distinct personalities of each musician, showcasing their remarkable range and skill. The composition unfolds as a jubilant celebration of jazz's expansive realms, simultaneously inspiring and delighting the senses. Brimming with energy, the plaintive conversation at the outset evolves into a soulful exchange, culminating in a spirited rendition of the main melody. Open harmonies create a warm, expansive sound, fostering freedom and spontaneity in the solos. A fitting tribute to McCoy Tyner, "Angel Song" reflects Eric Koppa's profound musicianship, shaped by his diverse experiences in Madison and Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Influenced by saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, Koppa's exploration of avant-garde, free jazz, and more is evident in this soul-stirring composition.
