Other Things Like You, Vol. 1 By Brian Erickson
Official Album Release date 6/30/2023
Album Description:
“Other Things Like You, Vol. I” consists of a variety of songs related by themes such as lost love, self-reflection, and seeking direction. Each song represents a meditation on the subtleties of relationships. From the swagger of “Rhinestones and Ruffles” to the wistfulness of “Lullaby”, one discovers that Brian Erickson’s songwriting skill is both wide and deep.
On its surface, “Rhinestones and Ruffles” is an infectious, musical gem, while a scratch at this surface reveals a perceptive, lyrical take on relationships. Coupling elements of various styles of country, their conjunction makes for a winning combination of charm and depth.
A powerful folk ballad steeped in rich imagery, “Lullaby” shares an intimate view into a relationship on the way to its winter season. With captivating melodic turns that inspire hope, this song leaves us wondering about the next chapter for the troubadour.
The infectious country folk, two-step feel, coupled with slide guitar, draws one into the state of confusion described in “Kept Free” so smoothly, one nearly overlooks the fact that such existential dilemmas are often heart-wrenching. We find hope in bewilderment at the end, wondering what it all means.
A medium-tempo, bluesy, southern rock exploration of immaturity, “Foolish Ways” dazzles with hip guitar lines and insightful lyrics.
“Chimerical Days” meditates on the loss of self that can occur in romance as well as the sorrow and regret that occurs at the end of a connection. Brian Erickson’s rich baritone voice floats around the sparse guitar accompaniment, leaving us with hope for another chapter, as the song ends right where it began.
An ode to a time that is just right, “Untitled” is a bluesy, folk song with an unusual form that features outstanding guitar and piano solos. Brian Erickson’s baritone voice shines, delivery impressionistic lyrics inspired by the changes of the seasons.
Combining mellow folk and rowdy rock, “Trajectory” celebrates the effect of non-romantic connections on our lives.
The melancholy, folk ballad “Cardinal” powerfully portrays the feelings of loss and loneliness that occur at the end of a relationship. Brian Erickson’s mournful baritone voice, accompanied by baritone ukulele, leaves the listener pondering why the cardinal sings alone.
The romping, joyous swing of “Bend” captures well the message of hope and acceptance the lyrics affirm. An affirmation of the need for frivolity as well as solemnity, this song reminds one of times of spontaneous dance near juke boxes in honky tonks.
The finale of the album, “In Our Land” reprises a theme from the song “Rhinestones and Ruffles”, but with a rougher, rock feel. We’re left ultimately with the sense that the relationship discussed throughout the album may be over in one way, but that the relationship may have a future in yet another way.

Artist Bio:
Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Brian Erickson began his musical studies on piano in second grade. His next instrument was the drums, which he started playing when he was in fifth grade, and he taught himself guitar along the way as well. His vocals are smooth like James Taylor’s and rich like Greg Brown’s, both distinct and familiar. He was recognized as a precocious musician, beginning his professional music career in the 10th grade, notably in bars he would have been kept out of otherwise. Like many fine musicians of his generation, he found his way to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire to pursue studies in jazz, which led him to Minneapolis, Minnesota where he played many styles of music, and pursued his interest in being a singer and songwriter. Mr. Erickson lives in Minneapolis still, with his partner, son, and daughter.
